Ambassador Designate David Thorne Remarks at his Arrival to Italy, August 28, 2009
Fiumicino Airport VIP Lounge
Good morning, ladies and gentlemen.
I am honored, and indeed excited, to arrive in Italy once again, this time as the designated Ambassador to represent the United States of America in Italy and in the Republic of San Marino.
Italy has been my second home, since I first moved here as a young boy at the age of 8. I love Italy dearly, second only to my own country. Although I have spent many years in Italy, I know that I have much to learn in this new position, and I am sure that many of you will help me in that learning process!
The Italian-American partnership is a long one, and our alliance is strong. But I am committed to finding new ways to build upon this legacy and nurture a living, two-way dynamic partnership, “un rapporto vivo.” I want to ensure that Italy and the United States continue to work together to address the global challenges we face.
I look forward to presenting my credentials to the President of the Republic. If he does me the honor of accepting them, I will at that time become the 37th Ambassador of the United States in Italy.
I imagine that you all know that, in conformity with diplomatic practice, I cannot conduct official activities until my credentials are accepted at Quirinale, and therefore I will not be able to respond to any questions today, of whatever nature. I amsure , however, that we will have plenty of time to get to know each other in the upcoming months.
