[…] When IBM, known as “Big Blue,” launched in 2007 its “Big Green” initiative based on cutting-edge technologies, it got the corporate world’s attention. Under the initiative, IBM offered to build new data centers or redesign existing centers at companies and other large organizations to reduce their energy consumption and the carbon emissions caused by electricity production. An average data center could expect 42 percent energy savings, which would prevent 7,439 tons of carbon per year from being released into the atmosphere. full text

[…] Plants used or being considered for renewable energy sources are the featured celebrities at the U.S. National Arboretum, highlighted in a special exhibit during its Bioenergy Awareness Days launched June 21. “Power Plants” features flora from around the world: field crops, palms, trees and flowering annuals. […] The United States and China have signed a framework for cooperation on energy and environmental issues and will launch negotiations on an investment treaty, says U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson. Paulson and Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan completed two days of meetings at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, June 18, and signed a 10-year Energy and Environment Cooperation Framework. full text

[…] there are many forms of ethanol. Corn gets a lot of attention but there are many others like palm oil, Jatropha and sweet sorghum which have higher energy content than corn for example, they can grown on arid lands in many developing countries without fertilizer and pesticides.
We are also interested in second and third generation ethanol, which is cellulosic ehanol such as switch grass, woody biomass wood chips, landfills, and waste converted to biogas.
