North Korea demolishes the cooling tower at the Yongbyon nuclear facility in June.

[…] U.S. and Japanese news agencies had reported that North Korea appeared to be reassembling its Yongbyon facility. On August 26, North Korean officials threatened to restore the plutonium processing facility if the United States did not remove the country from the State Sponsors of Terrorism List. McCormack, the assistant secretary of state for public affairs, said the United States and the International Atomic Energy Agency have inspectors at the Yongbyon facility now and are monitoring North Korean actions. full text

A bomb disposal technician discovers unexploded cluster munitions in Lebanon.

[…] Stephen Mathias, head of the U.S. delegation joining over 100 other countries in Geneva July 7-25, said the United States shares other countries' concerns about the unintended harm to civilians and civilian infrastructure caused by the use of cluster munitions -- explosives launched by aircraft or ground-based artillery that discharge smaller bombs over an area. Such munitions can have a devastating effect on civilians who come in contact with bombs that fail to explode upon impact. full text
