Rome, February 25, 2011
Following up on President Obama’s February 24 conversation with Prime Minister Berlusconi, Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs William J. Burns consulted with senior Italian Government officials on February 25 on the way forward in Libya and the overall situation in the Middle East and North Africa.
Rome was the first stop on under secretary Burns' visit to several European capitals. The United States and Italy share deep concern about the humanitarian situation in Libya and the urgent need to end violence there. The United States looks forward to continued close consulations with Italy and our other European partners on responding to developments in Libya and the region.
