Rice Says Aid to Lebanon Will Support Government’s Reforms, January 25, 2007

to help rebuild the country, Rice said the major increase in U.S. support “reflects our steadfast commitment to the
Lebanese people, but also our faith in the Lebanese people and their ability to overcome their difficulties.”
A “substantial portion” of the new $770 million in U.S. assistance will
be in the form of grants, and Rice said the money will continue
U.S. support for security, reconstruction, and development efforts throughout
Lebanon. “Most
importantly,” Rice
said, “our assistance will support the Lebanese government's own ambitious
reform program, which demonstrates its commitment to reducing

Tonight, President Bush Will Discuss How The President's Malaria Initiative (PMI) Is Saving Lives. President Bush announced
the President's Malaria Initiative (PMI) in June 2005.
A five-year, $1.2 billion program, PMI challenges the private sector
to join the U.S. government in combating malaria in 15 of the hardest-hit
African countries. PMI's goal is to cut malaria's mortality rate by 50 percent
in these target countries, freeing the citizens of these African nations from

U.S. State Department Reviews Nations' Anti-trafficking Progress, January 19, 2007
Many countries have made progress in implementing anti-trafficking goals cited in the U.S. State Department's annual
Trafficking in Persons report, but some nations need to make greater efforts, according to the department's assessment of 39
countries' anti-trafficking programs.
The State Department January 19 released its Trafficking in Persons Interim Assessment of nations on the department's
special watch list. That list includes countries deemed to warrant special scrutiny of their anti-trafficking efforts, as
required by the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act (TVPRA) of 2003. (...)

Bush Administration Seeks $10.6 Billion in Afghan Aid, January 25, 2007
The Bush administration is proposing $10.6 billion in U.S. aid to Afghanistan in conjunction with the January 26 NATO
ministerial meeting in Brussels, Belgium, which will focus on international support for the country.
A senior State Department official said January 25 that $2 billion of that total would be used for civilian reconstruction aid,
and $8.6 billion for military assistance to train and equip the Afghan army. (...)
