United States, Iran Agree To Hold Talks on Iraq, May 14, 2007
Following on a brief exchange between U.S. and Iranian officials at the Iraq Neighbors’ Conference in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, Washington and Tehran have agreed to engage in ambassadorial-level discussions about the situation in Iraq.
State Department deputy spokesman Tom Casey said the agreement was a “logical follow-up” to the discussions in Sharm el-Sheikh May 3-4.
“The Iranians ... continue as they have in the past, to say that they would like to play a constructive role, and that they want to
help in promoting the stability of Iraq. We, in light of the conversations that have taken place in the Neighbors' Conference,
want to give a chance to test that proposition out,” Casey told reporters at a State Department briefing May 14. (...)

Bush Names Army General as Senior Advisor for Iraq, Afghanistan, May 16, 2007
President Bush has nominated a senior U.S. Army general to be his presidential assistant and day-to-day troubleshooter for
Iraq and Afghanistan.
The White House announced May 15 that Bush had chosen Lieutenant General Douglas Lute to serve as

U.S. Committed to Resolving Iran Nuclear Dispute, May 15, 2007
U.N. inspectors have reported that Iran's nuclear program may be further along than previously thought and White House
spokesman Tony Snow says the international community remains united in its commitment to pressure Iran to suspend its nuclear
program and resume negotiations.
"There continues to be unity among the allies when it comes to trying to put pressure on the Iranians so they do come to the
table, they do, in fact, suspend the program, and they do make possible a whole series of benefits that would be good for the
