Message for LGBT Pride Month

U.S. Ambassador David H. Thorne

June 2012

This June the United States celebrates LGBT Pride Month, a time to celebrate our diversity and work together to eliminate prejudice.  Italy is also marking LGBT Pride with a range of celebrations, events and parades across the country from Bologna to Palermo to Rome.

President Obama, in his proclamation for LGBT Pride Month, recognized the hard work of LGBT rights activists and advocates, their families and friends who “fought to build for themselves and their families a nation where no one is a second-class citizen, no one is denied basic rights, and all of us are free to live and love as we see fit.”  I would like to take this opportunity to also recognize the commitment and dedication of our friends and colleagues in the Italian LGBT rights movement.  We all have to do more to combat homophobia, and particularly the terrible homophobic bullying and violence that has cost us the lives of young people both in America and around the world.  It is simple:  Gay rights are human rights.

We are proud to stand with the Italian gay community, and I know many of our American community will be celebrating with you and marching in the Pride parades in the coming weeks.  Happy Pride!
