Statement by U.S. Ambassador David Thorne on the attack in Benghazi

Rome, September 12, 2012

I was extremely saddened to learn about the death of four American officials killed during the deplorable attack on our diplomatic facility in Benghazi, Libya and join the President in condemning this vicious attack.

Among those killed was Ambassador Chris Stevens.  I knew Chris and admired the tremendous courage he showed as he selflessly served our country and the Libyan people as one of the first Americans on the ground in Libya during their revolution.  The death of these four courageous Americans shocks all us who worked together to build the foundation for a new, free nation for all  Libyans.

I am grateful for the words of support, solidarity and condolences that we received from the Italian people.
