U.S. Delegation "Life Sciences Exchange Project" Conference Center of Magnetic Resonance (CERM) - Università degli Studi di Firenze, May 12, 2006 Diamyd, Inc Michael Christini Diamyd, Inc, (formerly Nurel) was formed in December, 2005 following the acquisition of Nurel by Diamyd Medical, based in Stockholm, Sweden. Diamyd, Inc. (referred to as Diamyd in the remainder of this document) is now a subsidiary of Diamyd Medical. Diamyd’s lead product, NPE2, is based on a herpes simplex virus (HSV) gene-delivery system that expresses the human enkephalin peptide, developed by Diamyd’s founding scientists at the University of Pittsburgh. In the treatment of chronic pain, NPE2 expresses enkephalin in neurons and reduces the transmission of pain signals to the brain. Diamyd’s has delivery system is engineered to induce neurons to manufacture pain relieving compounds locally, and for extended periods of time, at the site of pain. Diamyd’s gene delivery products are aimed at very large markets with high unmet needs in patients with chronic refractory pain. The Company’s NPE2 product and non-replicating HSV vector platform will offer significant benefit over existing treatments for chronic pain which are which are highly unstable, toxic when delivered systemically, and require repeated administration to achieve therapeutic affect. NPE2 is superior because it selectively targets peripheral neurons when delivered by intradermal injection, does not replicate after injections providing a safety advantage; is capable of local delivery, thus eliminating systemic toxicity concerns and can be manufactured at a cost-effective scale.
