(December 13, 2007) - Anti-Dal Molin Protests Planned in Vicenza December 14-16, 2007

According to local authorities, a large anti-Dal Molin protest is planned in the Vicenza city area from December 14–16, 2007. The major event of the weekend is expected to be a demonstration on December 15, 2007. Law enforcement authorities estimate that up to 12,000 (twelve thousand) participants, from a number of groups, are possible. Although violence is not expected, there will likely be traffic flow disruptions and significant police activity in and around Vicenza’s town center.

The demonstration is expected to begin at Vicenza’s Piazzale della Ferrovia dello Stato (the square in front of the main train station) and the projected route will continue along Viale Milano, to Viale Mazzini, to Viale D’Alviano, to Contra San Bartolo, to Contra San Francesco, to Via della Misericordia, to Ponte dei Carmini, along Corso Fogazzaro, to Contra Busato, to Contra Porta Nuova, Piazzale Giusti, Corso San Felice Fortunato, to Via Roma and conclude at Campo Marzo in front of the main train station.

U.S. citizens are advised to avoid Vicenza’s town center from December 14, 2007 to December 16, 2007. We wish to remind American citizens that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence. American citizens are therefore urged to avoid the areas of demonstrations if possible, and to exercise caution if within the vicinity of any demonstrations. U.S. citizens should monitor local media for updated information on the planned demonstration.

All Americans in Italy are urged to register either online at https://travelregistration.state.gov or by phone or in person directly with the U.S. Embassy in Rome or the Consulates General in Naples, Milan and Florence.
